KASPER SCHMEICHEL IS MOVING ON TO NEW CHALLENGES
Notts County and Kasper Schmeichel have today agreed terms for a mutual cancellation of his contract with effect from the end of the season, facilitating his release on a free transfer.
Schmeichel joined Notts County on a five-year contract in August 2009 as one of the major signings attracted to the club by Sven Goran Erikson under the previous owners.
However, despite a string of fine performances throughout this season and Notts County's desire to retain the player's services, it was decided that the best deal for all parties was to agree a cancellation of the highly-rated young goalkeeper's contract.
Notts County Chief Executive Jim Rodwell said of today's announcement: "Kasper has performed brilliantly for the club all season, and throughout all of the problems behind the scenes he has remained a consummate professional. We would have loved to have kept Kasper at the club but financially that just wasn't possible."
Schmeichel will officially leave the club on Tuesday 11th May 2010 and Ray Trew said: "To hold out for a possible transfer fee was too big a risk for this football club. If we were not able to sell him, the value of his contract over the next four years was such that it could have had severe financial implications on Notts County's future. Kasper has agreed to forgo all his future wages, which is a huge concession by such a young man."
Tony Lymn, Kasper's advisor, said "Notts County are being released from a large liability but importantly Kasper is free to look for a new club where he can play first team football, hopefully in either the Premiership or the Championship. This agreement does mean forgoing millions of pounds in future wages but it allows Kasper to develop his career whilst ensuring that Notts County not only survive but can progress in League 1 and therefore the deal works for everyone".
Kasper said "I have had a terrific season at Notts and thoroughly enjoyed every moment and I'll be first in the queue for the end of season DVD.
"It is flattering to be linked with other clubs in the press but so far no-one has made a bid for me so I'll just have to wait and see. I came here at the start of the season and there were big plans but our focus was on gaining promotion, which we have done.
"With the new owners hopefully the club can continue to move forward. I am sad to be leaving and I'd like to thank all of the players, staff and in particular the fans who have been fantastic all season."
